Ocmulgee Indian Celebration/Mounds

Dylan's 2nd grade class went on a field trip to the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds on Friday, September 19. I was fortunate enough to go with them as a chaperon. Lucky for our class, we had five other parents go with us. Some classes didn't have any chaperons! There were three different counties (all 2nd grade classes) at the Indian Mounds, so you can imagine how many children were running around everywhere!! I think we stood in line for the bathroom for at least 30 minutes. Time went by very fast while we were there, but we did get to see a few things. We watched the Indian dances, visited a few booths and walked up to the Indian Mounds. We didn't actually get to go inside because the wait was 45 minutes to an hour. We learned about the different items made from animals (knifes, fishing hooks, leather for shoes and clothing among other things). They use all of the animal to make these things. They even use the brains to soak the skin in to remove the oils. We got to watch them make arrowheads. It was very interesting! We are going to try and go back as a family so we can actually go inside the Indian Mounds.

The Indian rivals performing. Also, they showed the horses' painted bodies and told their meanings.

The entrance to the Indian Mounds and also some larger mounds off in the distance. It is about a 2-mile walk to the other mounds.

The Indian you see here is the one that showed us how the Indians made arrowheads and other items. We also watched a demonstration of how they skin the animal fur.

QB Controversy Brewing as Falcons Remain Undefeated

MACON, Ga - (AP WIRE) Any questions about whether the Falcons would bounce back from a disappointing tie last Thursday were answered last night. The 24-12 victory over the Blue Thunder, however, may have raised another question: who will start at quarterback in Game 4?

Tripp Vaughn took advantage of his opportunity to spell starting quarterback Dylan Webb and threw two touchdown passes as the Falcons improved to 2-0-1 on the young season.

Webb had an uncharacteristic off night, failing on both of his pass attempts, but did convert on a critical fourth-down play, gaining 5 yards to keep the Falcons opening drive alive. That led to Sam Clarke's third touchdown of the season, a 27-yard run, that tied the score at 6.

On the Blue Thunder's ensuing drive, Webb nearly hauled in an interception, but the ball unfortunately caromed of his face mask. The 7-year-old Springdale second-grader nearly came up with another pick in the second half but the ball narrowly sailed over his outstretched hands.

The defense held though and allowed the Falcons to get the ball back at midfield with :05 left in the half. Austin Evans sprinted around left end as time expired for the touchdown and the Falcons led 12-6 at the intermission.

"I didn't really feel that I played that good at quarterback, but I played better defense," Webb said after the game.

Fortunately for the Falcons, Vaughn stepped up in a supporting role. He hooked up with Clarke twice in the second half for scores of 20 and 22 yards.

"I'm just glad we won," Webb said. "That's important."

Indeed, considering the Falcons lackadaisical effort in Game 2 - perhaps sluggish from the big openig day win. The team was relegated to a tie when its harrowing last-minute drive stalled at the 5-yard line as time expired.

Game 4 is slated for Thursday.

Webb, Falcons Take Flight

MACON, GA (AP Wire) - It wasn't Dylan Webb's birthday Tuesday night, but nevertheless he got "his wishes."

Webb, a 7-year-old in his first year of flag football, said in the days leading up to the opening game that he hoped Falcons coach Surjit Patel would let him play quarterback even though he didn't have much experience. He did and Webb dazzled in a 20-13 victory over the Tornadoes.

Webb completed all three of his passing attempts, including two for touchdowns, and the Falcons stand 1-0 in the Stratford Youth League Flag Football standings.

"We had a plan before the game that everyone was going to go deep except for Sam," Webb said.

Sam Clark proved to be Webb's favorite target, connecting with him on touchdowns of 35 and 30 yards.

On the Falcons first possession Austin Evans streaked 50 yards for a touchdown. Afterward, Webb found Clark in the end zone for the 1-point conversion and the Falcons led 7-6.

After the Tornadoes scored to go up 13-7, Webb and Clark hooked up for the first of the duo's scores. The extra point failed and the game was tied at the half.

The Falcons got the ball to open the second half. On third down, Webb scrambled on a designed QB bootleg to gain a critical first down and keep the drive alive. Then he lobbed a perfect spiral over the outstretched arms of a defender to Clark, who did the rest down the right sideline. Jayen Patel ran for the extra point and the Falcons defense held on fourth down at their own 10-yard line before running out the clock to secure the victory.

"All the practicing in the front yard with my dad is helping," Webb said.

The Falcons will look to remain undefeated Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in game 2 of the young season.

Pictures from New York

Here are some pictures that I couldn't get onto the slide show.....

New York 2008

Pops took Brandon and Dylan to New York to see the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium before they tore it down. They all had a GREAT time!! Dylan's favorite part of the trip was going to Central Park and, of course, the game. He loved it!! We need a park like that around here. I know this was a trip that Dylan will never forget. Thanks Pops for taking him and showing him New York!
