MACON, Ga. - Fans I've seen a lot of firsts in my days.
Men landing on the moon. A talking monkey. And believe it or not, one time Ryne Sandberg actually picked up a bar tab. What a doozie, too, I tell you we were snowed in at Milwaukee and we musta drank...aw, where was I?
Oh yeah. But what I witnessed Saturday afternoon was quite a sight. Young Dylan Webb hit an inside-the-park home run - the first of his career - and the Cubbies routed the Cardinals 14-8 to move to 2-0.
Webb went 2-for-3 on the day, adding a single in the fifth inning, drove in three runs and scored twice. Yowza! But the first-inning round-tripper was the highlight. He slapped a line drive deep into left-center and thanks to a couple errant throws huffed and puffed home and the Cubs led 5-0. Holy cow!
He also showed his versatility in the field, playing second base, shortstop, catcher and centerfield. I'm telling you, keep an eye on this kid.
The Cubs dominated throughout and took a 14-4 lead into the last inning. After wholesale defensive substitutions, the Cardinals scored four runs to make the final tally look closer than it really was.
After the game Cubbies' skipper Mike Taylor announced that Webb will make his career-first start on the mound Tuesday night.
