Dylan visits "The Paperclip"

Dylan is out of school for spring break this week. When we asked him last week what he wanted to do he told Brandon he wanted to go to the NASCAR race in Martinsville, Virginia and tour the race shops in and around Charlotte, North Carolina over the weekend.
Dylan really liked this track because at just a half-mile, it is the shortest track on the circuit. He could see the entire track without having to turn his head and said it looked just like the race track Brandon built him to race on upstairs in the playroom.
Martinsville is shaped like a paperclip, hence the nickname, and is famous for its concession stand hotdogs. Dylan loved them. He ate one more than his dad.
This was the seventh different track Dylan has visited, adding Martinsville to Talladega, Daytona, Charlotte, Darlington, Bristol and Atlanta.

Cherry Blossom Festival 2009

This past weekend, Dylan's class was invited to ride the fire truck in the Cherry Blossom Parade. The Chief of the Fire Department came and talked to Dylan's class for Black History Month and gave his class a special invitation to ride on the truck. It was a lot of fun and the kids had a blast! It was even on TV! I asked John and Rebecca if they wanted to go with me because Brandon couldn't make it to the parade, so Mrs. Davis said they could ride the truck with us. Because we were in the parade it was hard to get pictures of the parade, but I managed to get a few of the kids and some things waiting to get in line for the parade.

Dylan and Sutherlan waiting for the parade to start.

Ian and Dylan before the parade started. It ended up being hotter than I thought it would be, so Dylan was mad at me because he didn't wear shorts and he was complaining about being hot.

This is a picture of Mrs. Davis with some of our class. She is the one on the right with the pink shirt and scarf around her neck. We LOVE Mrs. Davis!!! Also pictured, Ato (Morgan and Carina's dad), their brother and either Morgan or Carina (They are twins and I can't tell them apart!) and John is on the left.

The theme for Cherry Blossom Festival is "Think Pink" and the Mascot is The Pink Poodle.

I know everyone knows the Crime Dog from Crimestoppers! The kids loved seeing him!

Afterward, we headed over to the Cherry Blossom Festival and let the kids ride some rides, enjoyed some good fair food and had ice cream for dessert!

Bailey and Sutherlan riding the roller coaster. I hope you can see their faces because I laughed so hard I was crying! It was so much fun to watch them.

Dylan and Ian riding this fun ride. I wish I could have ridden it with them. It looked like a lot of fun!

Webb solid in pitching debut

MACON, Ga. - Folks, I gotta tell ya, I've never seen someone so nervous before and during the opening stanza of Tuesday's tussle between your beloved Cubbies and the visiting Diamondbacks.

Holy cow!

This guy was pacing the dugout, rubbing his forehead. I mean his nerves were shot. He looked like he might lose his lunch at any minute...kinda like Ron Cey after a bender.

You see, Dylan Webb made his debut on the mound here tonight. But he wasn't the one in the aforenmentioned dire straits due to his first career start as a pitcher. Instead, it was his father who needed the Rolaids. The young right-hander handled it like a champ, en route to a 6-2 victory.

"I was pleasantly surprised," Brandon Webb, the drained - but proud - papa said after the game, which leaves the Cubs undefeated at 3-0. "He practiced well, but it's a different story when it's for real. A lot of times when you put a batter in the box it all goes out the window."

In a lone inning of work, Webb struck out one and did not allow a hit. Two batters reached on infield throwing errors and one scored an unearned run to give the visiting Diamondbacks an early 1-0 lead. All in all, however, it was a solid debut for the soon-to-be 8 year old.

Offensively, he singled and scored in the bottom half of the first as the Cubs took a 2-1 lead.

Then a fielding error by Webb while playing second base in the second inning allowed the Diamondbacks to even the score. But he redeemed himself in the third while playing shortsop. Webb scooped up a bloop hit and narrowly threw out the runner at first to help end the inning.

Returning to the plate in the fourth, he singled and reached third on a throwing error before scoring again. He is now 6-for-8 at the plate for the season, for a gaudy .750 batting average. He has driven in 5 runs and scored 5 times in the first three games.

The Cubs will be off for a week during Spring Break.

Holy Cow! Webb hits HR, Cubs roll

MACON, Ga. - Fans I've seen a lot of firsts in my days.

Men landing on the moon. A talking monkey. And believe it or not, one time Ryne Sandberg actually picked up a bar tab. What a doozie, too, I tell you we were snowed in at Milwaukee and we musta drank...aw, where was I?

Oh yeah. But what I witnessed Saturday afternoon was quite a sight. Young Dylan Webb hit an inside-the-park home run - the first of his career - and the Cubbies routed the Cardinals 14-8 to move to 2-0.

Webb went 2-for-3 on the day, adding a single in the fifth inning, drove in three runs and scored twice. Yowza! But the first-inning round-tripper was the highlight. He slapped a line drive deep into left-center and thanks to a couple errant throws huffed and puffed home and the Cubs led 5-0. Holy cow!

He also showed his versatility in the field, playing second base, shortstop, catcher and centerfield. I'm telling you, keep an eye on this kid.

The Cubs dominated throughout and took a 14-4 lead into the last inning. After wholesale defensive substitutions, the Cardinals scored four runs to make the final tally look closer than it really was.

After the game Cubbies' skipper Mike Taylor announced that Webb will make his career-first start on the mound Tuesday night.

Cubs win! Cubs win!

MACON, Ga. - Hello, everybody!

Harry Caray here to give you the Cubs wrap-up from last night. Holy Cow, what a bee-you-tiful day for a ballgame. And the season opener at that.

The Cubbies' bats were on fire last night as they dusted off the Rockies 7-1 in 4 innings. You know what else is on fire right now? These hot dogs in the press box. Yummy! Sometimes I wish I was a hot dog. If I was a hot dog I'd put mustard all over myself and and eat me...

Anyways, where was I... oh yeah, Dylan Webb had a solid outing, going 1-for-2 at the plate. He drove in a run with a single and advanced to second on an error before scoring to cap the Cubs' four-run first inning.

After playing second base and shortstop, Webb played catcher in the third inning before returning to shortstop. He did not make his debut on the mound but is slated to pitch Tuesday the 24th.

The Cubs (1-0) return to action Saturday against the Cardinals at 3:45 p.m.

Atlanta Motor Speedway

This past Sunday was the race in Atlanta. Brandon and Dylan go every year and Brandon always gets a picture of Dylan at the race. When they got home, I think Dylan was more excited to tell me about some guys who were escorted out of the race track for throwing ice and food at some girls. You just never know what you are going to see at the races!

Princess for a Day

Sutherlan was invited to her friend Caroline's birthday party on Saturday. They all dressed up like princesses and had a tea party. As a surprise, Aurora "Sleeping Beauty" came and the girls were all shocked to see her. They didn't know what to do...they just stood there staring at her. It was really funny! They made wands and had cake and ice cream. It was a fun birthday party and Sutherlan told me when we left that she wanted to have a tea party with her friends. I guess we know what we are going to do next year!
